WALK 1 -- "Is There a Formula for Beauty?"
Ron and Marcia comment on the ratio of parts as a factor that
contributes to beauty. This concept was similarly expressed by my
students. When they were shown a collection of art prints, the Taj
Mahal was overwhelmingly selected as "beautiful." Many students
commented with words like, "symmetry,lines, proportions" which made the
structure beautiful.
I have my students complete a photo album type project at the end of
the school year when we study Greek architecture. They are required to
take photos or sketch examples of classical architecture in their own
city or nearby town. We are very close to Cal Tech which has many
fabulous examples of classic architecture. Students really enjoy this
particular assignment and can readily see how architectural styles have
survived for centuries.

WALK 1 -- "Beauty and the Beholder"
Many of my students responded to beauty in a subjective manner. They
viewed art samples and assessed the artworks' beauty from the inner
pleasure they experienced. Could this subjective view regarding art
exist because of limited art experience or lack of knowledge? I wonder
what would happen if I repeated the initial Classroom Forum Activity
(refer to e-mail sent to listserv on October 21) six months from
now--how would responses be the same/different?
Do you think as peoples' experiences and exposure to art are increased
their views may become more objective? Or is it simply a matter of
likes and dislikes? Obviously this carries over into seeing beauty in
other things; music and sports are only a few examples to illustrate
this point. There are some who will never see the beauty in certain
aspects of sports or specific types of music. I would imagine that this
would probably hold true for certain types of art also.
