Giving clay to aggressive students will work, but not when you let them
punch it--have them wedge it till their worn out and then make things out
of it. The tactile nature of squeezing it and forming it is usually quite
theraputic on all of us. Allowing them to punch it is abusing the media
and teaching them to be aggressive. I once bought a punching clown for my
3 yr. old--it was weighted at the base and popped back up. I was
absolutely horrified by his reaction to it--he went nuts attacking it and
trying to destroy it. We tried not allowing our Jr. Hi kids to go out on
the play area for lunch but rather cut down the lunch period to 30 min.
They eat and then go back to class. Many were upset believing that this
age needed to go out and work off their energy but the principal had read
some research(sorry, I don't know where) that said that going out and
running amuck for 30 min. increases bad behavior, aggression, fights, and
certainly smoking etc. It has worked remarkable well. We didn't have any
students in detention for 3 weeks into the year. All of us duty teachers
absolutely hate being cooped up, however. Sid
