I think you'd have to define what the "pilgrim period" was. The first
people over had no time for art, crafts, or beautification! According to
their contractual agreements with those who financed their coming, most of
their needs were supplied. For example, although you will see basket making
in later periods, the pilgrims had their baskets supplied from England.
They were busy building their homes & fortification, planting vegetables &
herbs. One of the shots on the clickable link I gave is of a man mixing
mud/mortar with his feet, to be used on his house - now that would be a fun
in-class project!
