A horse in those days had work because of no cars. Also they were

Another teachable moment.... have students research what kind of horses
were on the North American Continent when the Pilgrims arrived....
Unless I am mistaken, horses were imported by the Spaniards (and other
foreigners).
The horses that once roamed North America were extinct.
