Peggy,

There was an interesting posting a while back about art/science units based
on illnesses that have touched the lives of the students. I know many of my
students suffer from asthma, and have written letters to legislators
(they're fourth graders) about smoking and pollution. There are many
interesting examples of artists whose work is about topical illnesses, such
as AIDS and breast cancer. Kids could come up with art projects about these
concerns.

Actually, those little cells are pretty interesting. I was a Bio major
until I realized I liked drawing the slides better than doing the
dissections...it might be an interesring way to introduce abstraction, the
kind we used to call "biomorphic or organic abstraction" back in the
"70's...
