I have done this lesson on visual and tactle texture with 1st and 2nd
graders. First we find tactile textures around the room and on their
bodies (denim, bottoms of shoes, etc.) Then we look around the room for
textures we can see. Students then create a self-portrait using collage
materials that have a lot of texture. We use lace hair, twisted paper
for eyes, sandpaper, burlap, wallpaper, etc. When the collages are
finished and dry a piece of drawing paper is placed on top and we do a
crayon rubbing and watch the face appear.
