art and math connections....

Hi, Jessica....there is SO MUCH out there for art and math connections but
you have to be creative in where to look and creative in designing your own
curriculum and projects. It's best if you have some sort of math background
or a math book in front of you, go through the math curriculum and dream up
your own ideas. Also....try going to math workshops and conventions...they
usually have some resources in that area. I looked and hunted EVERYWHERE
for two years before I was ready to start teaching a course connecting math
and art.

Eight years ago I went back to school to get my math supplement degree so I
could teach both math and art and be more marketable at a time when there
were not enough classes of art for a full-day job. I got a degree added to
my credential and taught math for 2 years as well as art. Now I'm strictly
in art but the math prep has been a bonus. I designed a course of ART 'N
MATH for middle school kids which went over super-well. So well in fact,
the local university asked me to teach it to teachers (who would then teach
it to kids). I now have an ART N' MATH I and II...two diff. courses. Most
of my stuff are my own original designs and ideas. All this came from a
particular professor I had who...even though he wasn't an artist in any
way...showed me the creativity in math...just thinking "creatively". I have
some (4) art-math lesson plans on the INCREDIBLE ART DEPARTMENT site in the
middle school section. If you're interested, check it out on the internet
