Shannon and Anne wrote and asked for help with a presentation about
multicultural arts. You asked why and how we might teach multicultural arts.
For me, the question is not why, but why not? Every culture makes art for
various reasons, some of which may not be obvious. As educators, we have an
obligation to open doors for our students, which includes different forms of
expression. As for How, it would be an impossible task to represent every
culture, and very exhausting for your students! You could select several
examples from different cultures based on a theme, such as "Family." Viewers
could look at the artwork, discuss and compare what they see. Careful looking
is often far more revealing than a lot of factual information. Rather than
telling them how and why the work was made, let them try to figure it out!
Good Luck!
