Studio lesson:

The following activity is geared for first graders who are learning about
Arcosanti and clay. At Arcosanti, residents create ceramic tiles to hang
on walls and for light switches as decorations. Prior to activity, teacher
will have cut out 4 1/2 x 3" slabs of different colored clays. Cut
appropriate sized holes for light switches and screws. Children will be
able to chose from different colored slabs. They can add pieces of other
colored clays, make stamps or find materials to make imprints with. After
slabs have been hardened by teacher, children can use acrylic paints to
decorate further. Design should have ecological ideas included. Children
will learn how to work with clay, colors and design, as well as
environmental aspects. Materials include clay that can be oven baked or
sundried, acrylic paints, brushes, and items to be used as imprints.
