I have had good luck with having even young children (as youn as 4&5)
do self-portraits. These can occur in a variety of ways - including
drawings, puppets, etc. We focus on physical characteristics.
Another project deals with changing identities using costumes and
photography. There should be a base photo of the child and then
several photos of who they would like to be and short sentances on
why.
These activites were part of a larger curriculum developed for a
multicultural magnet school called "The Face In Art."
