An interesting point Jeremy. .My great concern is that colouring in
books and work sheets are given to very young children,
3 to 7 year olds. Even before they have had a chance to
develop their own drawing language.
My own experience is that children need to be taught how to use the
whole page if that is the teaching aim. When Primary aged children
paint they do the detail first then are unable to fill in the
background as that would cover the detail. They need to be shown how
to paint the background first.. The other issue is the quality of the
image the children are being asked to colour. At the upper Primary
Level, when children have already established their own drawing
language, good eamples of adult drawing for reference and to colour
can supplement the art program.
