To Ron, et al,
When I was in my teens I thought that blue birds were a Disney invention. I
happened to mention this in front of my parents. They very quickly corrected
me. They described a very beautiful little creature with a beautiful song.
AND, they told me, they were plentiful here in the South. I asked whatever
happened to them. And they responded, "DDT". I was so angry and anguished
that I had been deprived of such a beautiful creature because of a pesticide.
And I was further angered that it was known that it was a problem and nothing
was being done. Or so I thought. When they outlawed DDT, I was ecstatic. But
I thought it was too late for the blue bird. When I saw and heard my first
blue bird, I cried. I am so grateful to Rachel Carson.
