On a separate, but related note .... this summer I went to a few art
festivals and picked up every business card I could get. Last week our
computer graphics class critiqued them in preparation for creating business
cards of their own. Generally speaking, the majority received horrible
reviews. One of them wasn't even a card, but a photocopy of a card .... and
the copy was dirty and crooked. It's amazing that people with such strong
aesthetic sensibilities can be without a clue when it comes to the quality of
things other than their work.
I emphasize the concept of 'total presentation' .... You have to create
quality art and present it in a way in which it is enhanced and appears to be
of more value .... which includes nice portfolio, well-designed business
cards and letterhead, and correct spelling and grammar on correspondence.
The more impressive the total presentation, the more an artist can command
for their work.
