My son is in fourth grade now, and his teacher is doing some really stimulating things as far as art education is concerned. At the beginning of each week, she has artwork by a famous artist posted (so far she has done Matisse, Georgia O'Keeffe, Magritte, Georges Seurat). The kids have till Friday to write 20 observations about the painting, and to research the artist. On Friday, the teacher discusses the artist's style (lines, shapes, space, etc.), and goes around the room asking each child for an observation. The class discusses each observation, such as how it is relevant, what do they think the artist was trying to say, etc. After the discussion, the kids do an art project based on the same technique as the artist they are studying that week. I help the teacher every Friday afternoon, and I have been really impressed with how the kids are progressing and observing. I hope this will help you.
