budget blues (or how to see the green!)

I get angry when I hear that administrators give less money to a
program that uses consumables every day, impacts every content area
and affects every student, than to a PE or Tech program that is
exclusive or at best narrow in impact! Ok, I on to a
pro-active stance.
You are woefully underfunded, so a positive step forward would be
communicating the needs of your department to:
1) the administration...let them know how you correlate with all
content areas and could help increase test scores if you could
actually have the kids go beyond conceptualization and planning to
actual creating. Student achievement rises when learning takes place
in, through and about the arts.
2) the parents...send out a periodic art department newsflash...about
an upcoming project(make sure everyone sees how relevant the project
is) and materials needed. You might be suprised who knows who has what
etc...Get some parent volunteers to help scavenge for you.
3) the community...contacts are everything! the local art frame
shops for scrap mat board, local grocery stores for school art
supplies that they are slash discounting now...Publix just donated a
large box of stuff to our school. Print shops, Chamber of Commerce for
a chance to present needs to Education Business Partners, etc...

Last but not least, GRANTS! They don't have to be written real fancy,
just use language tied into your state standards and make sure you
have measurable or touchable results.

When an administrator realizes the impact of a powerfully visable and
broad art program...and how much parents and the community want it in
their schools...they do start prioritizing. Try to be a pro-active
public relations person for yourself...even though you have to do
everything else may be the most important thing you do for
the kids in the long run!
