Regarding Sandra Hildreth's last note on drawing: "...The unusual
subject matter gets them to actually
look at it as they draw............We have to find ways to get our students
to actually look at what they are drawing, and to teach them fundamental
skills too. "
I have found this to be the basis for the both my classroom
curriculum planning, and the interdisciplinary (art and science) work I
have been involved in. If we can teach the kids to look CLOSELY at
the minute differences in objects, and among types of objects, the naturally
occurring curiosity that follows fires their ambition, and makes them
enthusiastic learners. This theory is integral to my approaches to teaching
kids, and as I see it, should be an important part of ALL education. The
more involved a child (person!) is with the learning, the more real it is!
It just makes sense! I could go on and on about this subject, but, really,
it is a simple idea, one that is overlooked all too often, and one that
crosses disciplines.
