At the request of my Department Chair, I'm currently exploring the
possibilities of starting a Community Arts course that will be offered for
the first time in the Fall 1997 and be required of all art students in our
Department. The overall goal of this course will be to increase students'
awareness of the role of the arts in the community...and the broader
social/cultural/political sphere.

In addition to readings and speakers dealing with related topics, students
will be required to initiate and/or participate in a community-based art
event/project/setting. For example, students might decide to create and
install a public art work, paint a mural in the community, act as a mentor
for a local public school child, participate in a local Arts and Medicine
program, and so on.

My question is do any of you know of such a course being offered at a
university or college? Have you ever participated in such a course as a
student? Do you have any suggestions on what should be included in such a
course?

Any thoughts or leads in this area would be most appreciated.

Craig
