My best door ever was the year we used a "William Wegman" theme. I bought a
disposable camera and let each kid in my homeroom (middle school) take the
camera home for one night. I had the kids all pumped up after showing them
photos of the Wegman dogs.
Speaking of William Wegman...He was a keynote speaker at our New York
Conference last week. He was terrific, full of wit and humor, like his
photographs. After he spoke, he drew in my journal (which has pics of his dogs and
which I had bought for the occasion) and signed his name under the drawing.
Then he, his adorable 8 yr. old daughter, and I, walked over to see the NY
State Art Teachers' Members Exhibit. For me the experience got all the more
exciting, when he spotted a painting and said, "Oh, I LOVE this painting!" I
said, "You do?!? Wow, really?!? It's mine." Then he said, "I REALLY like
it- it's so free. You know, I kind of paint like you." To this I said, "YOU
paint like ME, I don't think so. If, by any stretch of the imagination you
want to say that I paint like YOU..." What a down-to-earth guy! This made
my day and it made me wish I could spend all my days painting!
