I have used the bought scratch board and the kind the kids make themselves.
This was the best the handmade ever turned out!!! The trick of adding some
liquid soap to the black tempera keeps it from "super peeling." We used toothpicks
and paperclips to scratch with. This is elementary level, so no super sharp
tools and the first "misuse" of a "tool" and they lose their scratch board.
