The Stories section will be of interest to those of
you teaching multicultural art. Each work is based on
a story of a different culture. Some of them are
summarized below. Val studied anthropology in
undergraduate school.
From Val:
Peru: Maize is the primary food of the Inca
descendents of Peru. It is also used to transcend the
ordinary through offerings/worship to PachaMama for
protection/fertility of crops.
Soul Washer: The Asante of Ghana, Africa. Royal
attendants known as Soul Washers wear the protective
'Kra' disk (vital force) to ritually
purify/replenish Kings vital powers, help stabalize
and protect the nation.
Land of the Moon: Egypt. The Egyptian goddess Ipet
offers the life flame to the soul as it ascends to be
purified and weighed enroute to its resurrection.
Arctic Stories: The Ingalik of the SubArctic region
incorporate these ritual tools in their Mask Dances to
increase the numbers of game animals.
Browse all of the art on the site. The Shields are
interesting too.

Judy Decker
