Hi Wendy,
   The first one that comes to mind is Charles Demuth. He incorporated the
name of the poet, William Carlos Williams, in his painting, "Figure Five in
Gold." The painting is based on a poem by Williams. Also, look into Stuart
Davis.

i'm looking for artists who use words and/or writing along with imagery
within their work to communicate meaning (not just as decorative collage-y
elements).
