I too have battled this moral dilemma in my head and have been back and forth
on the topic. So - I have been changing the way I use stencils in the art
room just as often as my opinions on stencils has changed over the past few
years ;-) Such a good question...it has been great to hear others thoughts on this
matter. Thanks for asking!
As for me -- I too use stencils for my younger students for a few projects,
but I always leave room in that project for student creativity as well. I may
create the stencils for the students to use, but they are creating their own
unique design, or they are cutting out their own stencils, or even cutting out
my pre-drawn shapes to use as their stencils.
With my special needs/MH students, the stencils are a wonderful way to build
their confidence/success into a lesson...and still have room for their own
interpretation/expression.
