grades, and I wondered if anyone had any suggested lessons to use this with.
My fourth graders have just finished glazing their ceramic leaf creations. I
went to a local farm and picked pumpkin leaves. Actually, because the
pumpkins had already been harvested and so the yeld of leaves was scace , I needed
to pick eggplant leaves as well. Both are huge leaves that make fabulous
platters, or large dishes. Anyway, my kids emboss, cut around, and curl the edges
and stem in interesting ways. To glaze, I gave them a variety of fall colors
from Amaco gloss glazes. They use three or four cloros on one leaf. Stay away
from reds- hard to fire with greens. Or, fire reds separately.

Whoops, now that I gave that answer, I just reread your question, and you ask
about coloring other than glaze. Sorry! If possible, I would go with the
glazing, just as simple for young children to do as painting the ceramics, IMO.
If you can't, I suggest acrylic paint in fall colors. You can spray a gloss
medium over that, I think. However, the glazing allows the pieces to be safe
for food.

Not long ago, someone on this list had a fantastic lesson using scratchboard
and magazine photos(of models). If I remember correctly, that lesson was high
school level and involved fashion design. I was very impressed with it and
filed it away in my mind to adapt the idea for elementary school. Does anyone
have that lesson, or still have the site with the sample visuals?
