I would reassure him him/her that art was REAL- just as my Master's degree
was as real as the Science teacher's degree. I would let him know that art is
more than drawing "pretty pictures," but, it teaches students how to make
divergent choices, how to persevere and how to talk honestly about what we
see all around us. I would remind him that art is used in designing clothing,
food products packaging, commercials, book illustrations, cartoons,
buildings, homes, furniture, etc...etc.....I had one student ask me several
years ago when I received the Teacher of the Year award at my school....
"Mrs. Dixon, why aren't you a real teacher?" I laughed and said..."This as
real as it gets"!
