I actually attached the masks to 1/4" pieces of plywood. I'm not sure that a canvas panel would be strong enough (might warp). The plywood is actually a little cheaper than the canvas panels, but the trick is finding someone who can cut it for you.
It's a cool project, though, and it did serve to motivate some kids who weren't into much of anything before this.
