I have always done this particular technique with oxide and a glaze. You
apply a coat of iron oxide wipe it off and then apply the glaze directly
over the oxide.

Another alternative may be to apply a transparent colored glaze that would
pool in the textured areas and then apply the another transparent glaze
over the whole piece.
