Pretty Pictures :-)

As you all know most Americans love pretty pictures, hence the obsession with
Kinkade. ( And I can't believe how much play he is getting on our listserve!. He
sure is touching some nerves). But the love for "pretty pictures" gets proven
every year at our school. When I put up the kid's Pollock paintings or
distorted face drawings( which the kids and I loved), we don't hear too much
from the adults in the building. But recently my honors class just did large
O'Keeffe type pastel flowers and now I have people asking to buy them! One
parent want to buy 3 of them and I don't'even have her son in any of my classes!
I get this request to buy student art whenever the pictures are "pretty" or make
sense according to the level of art education that someone had received.
I fell we have our work cut out for us and so I will continue to have the kids
learn many styles of art - pretty or unusual( or pretty unusual)
I read in an article a number of years ago( that surveyed the general public)
most people prefer the color blue, Rembrandt and outdoor scenes. (Kinkade must
of read the article too!)
