I have just completed a lesson on emotion with my art 4 students where
they had to create a self portrait using the crosshatching technique on
scratchboard. They were to identify only the highlighted areas in heavy
crosshatch and create various values to the "shadowed" areas which would be
I was thinking about Brenda's paper portraits to exemplify an intense
study of color (maybe using color-aide paper)- of high to low contrast
studies- once again with the "Emotion" theme. I would have them draw out the
portrait first and contour out the various values as they are perceived.
These sections could then be "transfered" to respective colored paper,
cut-out and reconstructed to form their own self portrait. The students
could then explain their color combination technically and write a reflection
of how those colors impacted the emotional aspect of their portrait. Just my
first thought...still thinking...
