Re: Is Christmas Out ? Bah Humbug!

Date: Tue Nov 13 2001 - 03:44:13 PST

I do not do holiday art in my program for many reasons. I don't do ANY
holiday!!! However, in my school, so many different religions are
practiced, to study christian art would mean studying jewish art, muslim art,
hindu art, not to mention Jeovah Witnesses who do not believe in any sort of
religiousn symbol or idol. I am sure many of you face these same challenges.

The other reason I don't do holiday art is because when I began in my school,
most people felt this is what ele. art is. Now they have gotten past this
idea...and honestly, the classroom teachers usually do something with them
anyway. They certainly have more time with the children than I do, so it
actually makes more sense.

What I have done, is I personally do love Christmas art. So...I teach an
after school mini class called Holiday Sparkle. We do Christmas, Haunakkah,
and Kwanza crafts. This way, students who are interested are welcome, and no
one is forced to do a subject they are not comfortable with.
