I had a really neat thing happen last week...I had a visitor from one of our
local corporations in my classroom and my students were talking amongst
themselves when somebody said something about being "gypped". Another student
said "don't say that" and a discussion of racial slur(s) ensued. We spent
about 10 minutes talking about the origins of the word , that it came from
gypsy, etc. etc. It was very intersting and I ended up looking a few words up
in the dictionary and reading outloud to the whole class. A very teachable
moment! The corporate guy said later, "you spend alot of time teaching about
life, not just your subject matter"..."I never realized that!". Without
allowing talking things like this couldn't happen!
