I also had a parent donate to me the entire HBO Artist series as well as
spending $200 on videos this year. I use bits and pieces from biographical
videos (especially if it really shows the artist working or talking) and the
HBO series has been nice to play while kids are working as a bit of
historical fiction.

I would suggest using the video in tadem with free drawing...I find that
keeps them more occupied than just watching an hour long video. Some of
which might not be appropriate and you are not there to explain (long story
re: Calder video and male anatomy!)

For younger students....I recently had my first graders watch a video called
"I Can Fly"
The narrator is a teenager and it features the Blue Man Group and lots of
kids....they loved loved loved it...and in a discussion later....had picked
up the main idea that anyone can be creative doing lots of different things
and that there were lots of different kinds of art, dance, painting, acting,
etc.
