When I was a sub, I went into a school to sub for the art teacher but ended
up subbing for the music teacher who traveled to another school mid morning.
I was not left any lesson plans nor given a schedule. I found out I had 30
minutes once my classes ended to get to my other school. The only thing the
teacher had left was a video (Fantasia) for 7 kindergarten classes (each
class was 1/2 hour). So...I had brought a fun book with me and thought it
would be better if we read the book and the kids acted out the sound effects
(the other music teacher told me I did not have to do the video and could do
what I wanted if I had another idea). Anyway, in the course of playing with
maracas and such....one of them cracked. I left the teacher a note, told her
what we did and offered to pay for cracked maracas.
On to other school....same deal....she had left a video. So....I did similar
kinder lesson with maracas...(cracked another one) and then with a second
grade, had them listen to two different kinds of music and draw what they
thought the music was about. So...I left a note about that lesson,
appologized about maraca and offered to pay. Anyway....a few months later I
started working for the art/music coordinator in that school district. One
day we were talking about subs and this particular teacher came up.
Her comments were, " I had a sub who thought she was a music teacher. She
broke instruments. She was horrible!" Anyway, I told my boss that it was
me..she laughed...said teacher should never have left Fantasia for kinders
and told me never to tell that teacher it was me! (PS...maracas were really
old and taped together and even the tape was falling off and cracking it was
And now....I work with that teacher!!! (PS She loves me!) And.....nope...I
have never told her I was the "Horrible Sub!!!"
