We are making clay whistles at fifth grade, really sensational turnout with
the different creative ideas students are coming up with for changing the
whistles into little animals! The whistles are fairly simple and would be
really cute at a fundraiser. We are following the Janet Monoit model for the
simple whistles and my gifted are doing the oscerinas. Im positive hs could
do it and it really doesnt take much clay. The students want to make more
than one so they could make one for themselves or as a gift and one for the
fundraiser. The little ones make higher pitches and the larger ones lower,
its a neat little music tie in. We are adding a loop to each one and will put
a leather strip through at the finish. They can be painted , glazing has to
be done carefully as they can clog up but as long as youve got the wax resist
on certain areas like around the mouth end and whistle hole and where it rest
on a surface its okay. Anyhow, just a thought. I ordered the book and video
online but find walking the kids through step by step is better at
elementary. Good luck to you!
