I did some alabaster carving my Freshman year of college. I have it
somewhere. I loved working with it. We used wood working tools... you do
have to be careful because there can be a "grain" to it. Our project was
similar to making a solid plaster sculpture "feelie" only using
marble/alabaster instead. We found rasps and files to be the best tools
and then coated it layer upon layer of bowling alley wax till it glistened.
It takes a while...depending of the size piece you are using. Of course that
was years ago...and I bet some folks have some easier methods. It was a great
project.
