Hi all you knowledgeable people,
I'm teaching metals. Have been for wuite awhile. Have a problem with
copper deposit on metals cleaned in pickle.
The metal gets plated when I put it in there to clean. Have tried
different solutuions to that problem.
I know when kids put metal tongs other than copper in the pickle
solution, it contaminates the mix. Have tried cleaning the crock pot
with baking soda and mixing a new batch. Still have the same problem.
Next tried putting the sparex solution in a glass caraffe. Nix to the
mix. Nada NIET. Still get copper deposit on newgold and brass. Kids
whine a lot about having to sand it off. Metal gets clean, but copper
plated. Anyone have a solution for this problem? Have picked the brains
of everyone I know that deals with metals. No answer yet.
Have a good laugh for ya.
Ordered new prestolite torch set up since the other one is very old.
Hooked er all up and tested for leaks etc. Did 1 day's worth of work
with kids. Decided to work on anealing a piece after school while last
class waiting for the bell. Lit the torch, and had yellow smelly liquid
dripping from the nozzle which promptly started on fire, dripped to the
floor-----more fire, dripped tht cabinet and started that on fire. Never
had that happen in my life. Extinguished all with no damage( jest a
little brown) on the cabinet. Woah what the ??????was that? Called the
shop guy who told me to take it to the welding shop in town. Found the
tank was faulty and dripped acetone. Cute eh? The kids were goin
nuts------cheerin ! hopin I'd burn the place down! No such luck guys.
Today they were all asking if I got in trouble. I'll never tell.

Any help with the copper plating thing would be appreciated
thanks,
Gelato
