I have great success reading to the children while they work. I always try to
read something that relates to what I'm teaching them. Like when we were doing
a unit on Japan, I read them Japanese folk tales. I find that when I let them
talk, they stop concentrating and as you said, the talking gets progressively
louder. Hope this helps.
