Last year when I did sandpainting with my younger kids (5th & 6th graders)
we used liquid tempera, and dried it in shallow trays. Problem was that it
clumped up something awful as it dried!
HOWEVER, this led to a discussion of how the Native Americans (and also
Tibetan monks) would grind up different rocks to produce colored sand, so
this was worked into the project--kids would just grab a chunk of a
particular color and grind it into a container.
We spent one class period grinding up our "problem," and then we used it for
sandpainting the next day.
