Funny you should say that about atheletes. Just today my son, who is a superb
soccer player, was not bragging about the attention he gets for being a great
soccer player, but the praise he gets when he does art work at school! He is
a very talented artist, much more than me, but also loves music (plays the
trombone) and other activities. Being an accomplished artist at 12 helps him
stand out in his crowd of friends, who are all very good atheletes.
Me, I have four popular, accomplished sisters. I was gauky (sp?) and unsure
of myself and never felt special until I discovered I was an artist at 13.
When my students asked me why I teach art, I tell them it makes me feel
special. And I like to share that feeling with my students.
