Most current fashion trends have evolved from the music industry, so if
you look at the different styles of music (punk, grunge, etc.) you can
see how fashion evolved from the music and the style of the people
making it.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has a huge collection on fashion. You
might try their web-site to get more info (sorry, don't have their
internet address).
