End of Year I and II!

The last few days of school are upon us here! I am sending full
portfolios home with the students and trying to encourage them to get their
work all the way home! As a motivator, I have a collage that I made when I
was in kindergarten on the board... and ask the students, "How did this end
up here?" Most of them get the idea that I took it home and my mom saved it.
As the last class for today was getting ready to go I noticed one
student was folding his portfolio up like he did not care.... I asked why...
he said his foster parents would not save his work anyway! All year this kid
has been one that I enjoy, but who also drove me crazy...lots of behavior
issues. Wish I had known that one little detail about his life, and now
everything fits. Do you ever learn that a disruptive student is coming from a
really major life problem too late? Would I be more tolerant if I knew this
info, or am I better off left in the dark?
