A group of devoted Los Angeles youth have worked very hard making shadow
puppets, writing a story, and preparing a short performance over the
past fifteen weeks. On Wednesday evening, May 19th, the public is
invited to view the exhibit and see a performance by the students.

The residency began with performances of Alice in the Shadows in local
high schools and the Bob Baker Marionette Theater by Maria Bodmann and
friends, introducing students to shadow theater. The first week everyone
make simple cardboard figures and quickly moved onto more complicated
rawhide ones. Some designed their own characters, others chose to try
their hand at a traditional Balinese style puppet, others did both!
Using different sized chisels they carved holes, then sanded and painted
their figures. When painting began we all started working on the story
to present for this culmination. Now we are pleased to invite the public
to view our work.

This workshop and culmination is made possible by a grant from the Youth
Arts Services of the Cultural Affairs Department, City of Los Angeles and
the generosity of the Bob Baker Marionette Theater, the Academy of
Puppetry & Allied Arts, the Los Angeles Guild of Puppetry, and Bali & Beyond.

Hope to see you there,
