A teachable moment

I am truly on a wonderful (natural) high this afternoon and I wanted to
share with all of you. My 7th and 8th graders just finished the "Dinner
Party Project" inspired by Judy Chicago. Each kid chose a teacher they
liked/ respected and interviewed him or her to learn more about them. After
a few preliminary sketches, students set out to create a place setting-
complete with ceramic plate, silverware, mug or cup- that represented that
teacher. All settings were displayed in the library today as we had a real
dinner party with food and drinks. Kids planned and brought the food- it
looked as if it had been professionally catered. Each student welcomed
their teacher and gave them a tour of the group installation. I was
ecstatic when I heard a 12 year old explain to a teacher that Chicago helped
to create the feminist art movement and then went on to explain the REAL
dinner party. So much food- kids dressed up- it was one of those teachable
moments that I'll be thinking of for a long while.

Thanks for letting me gleam with pride- it seems I only post to the entire
listserv when I'm venting. This was a nice change.
