I just finished a clay mummy and sarcophagus with second
graders. Since I have them for 1 hour per week, it took a whole
six-week grading period to finish. We used a slab base and
coils for the sides (blending, scoring, slip, etc). The mummy
inside was made from a fat coil, squeezed in a bit for the legs,
broader at the shoulders. A ball for the head, another coil
(slightly flattened)for the headgear, coils for arms, beard,
staff, etc. Then another slab for the lid, on which the
students carved their name in hieroglyphs. After firing, we
painted with acrylic paints, including gold. They are very
happy with the results.
