Filters and monitors

Here's a question which has arisen in our district-actually,
specifically, in our HS. A committee looking at technology wants to buy into
a filtering system for our internet connections. The one we may have to use
is Bess. Our media specialist has some concerns about accessablity issues,
and so set up a visitation today to a neighboring HS who is using this
system. 7 of us went to surf and see what we thought. The filter makes
things load slowly, and some sites were not able to be accessed which we
know one of our social studies teachers would want students to use for research.
My questions to y'all : Have any of you ever run into a problem with
accessability to art sites ( for instance, with nudity or controversail
subject matter?) Can you control the filter at all? Turn it off,
temporarily? How 'bout monitors as opposed to filters? What are other issues
we may want to check into or know about? Thanks!
Trying to sort it out in Wisc where spring has sprung beautifully!
