Dear Jill,
We want so desperately to blame someone, and the parents seem so
obvious. Today's Washington Post carried a story with interviews of many
neighbors and friends of the two families. Without exception, they were
described as loving, involved families--the kind who bake brownies, go to
practices and ball games, give neighbors a helping hand. As young
children, the boys gave no one any indication of violent natures. One
family didn't allow their boys to play with toy guns.
The Harris boy was at some point diagnosed with psychiatric problems
and was
medicated. No one except the Brown Family (who were also friends of one
of the families) had the slightest notion. The Browns were told of the
vile website belonging to Eric Harris and reported it to the authorities.
The only trouble they ever got
into was a year ago. They stole tools from a truck and were put on
All the families interviewed said they were left wondering it they
really knew their own children as they thought. No one knows what made
these boys do such a monstrous act. But their parents have a terrible
burden. Surely they don't need any more pain.
