Totally Tessellated: An Introduction to Tessellations=20
Grade Level: 6-12+

A+
CONTENT: A tessellation is a repeating geometric pattern. Examples of =
these
beautiful designs can be seen in the mosaics of Mediterranean culture =
and
the surrealist art of M. C. Escher. Totally Tessellated takes you on an
exploration into the history and construction of a variety of different
types of tessellations.

A+
AESTHETICS: The site is full of art and architectural images depicting
tessellations. A number of great animations help illustrate the design =
and
construction process.

A
ORGANIZATION: Use the logo at the top of the page provides a =
navigational
menu the site. The logo also provides clues to your location within the
site. (For example, you can tell from the logo that you are on page 2 of =
4
in the Simple Tessellations section.) The site is large but is still
reasonably easy to navigate.

A+
REVIEW: Totally Tessellated: An Introduction to Tessellations has enough
material to keep an art class going for months! This fascinating site is
divided up into five main sections. The first is devoted to the historic
use of tessellations in art and architecture, and includes a large image
gallery of examples. Next is the Essentials section, which provides an
overview of the design and basic forms of tessellations. After you've
gotten a grasp of the basic concepts, go to Mosaics/Tilings for an
introduction to some more advanced forms of tessellations. Finally, =
explore
the section on Escher and the tessellations he created incorporating
creatures and beings. Each section breaks the tessellation down into its
components and then puts them together using short animations to =
illustrate
the process. This very inspiring site won high awards in the 1998
ThinkQuest competition.=20
