You might want to check out, research, or investigate the Ashley River
School which I believe is in SC, &/or the A+ Schools of NC, which are
primarily elementary schools which have a focus on interdisciplinary
instruction through the arts. If done well the arts do not loose their
integrity but are enhanced through this philosophy. No doubt it is hard
work and demands a change in frame of mimd to be successful. Give
thought to the fact that we learn best through making connections in
life. What are those connections? You can help answer those questions
along with your students. Remember that art is not made in a vacuum.
We have to remind ourselves that art has a function to our lives and to
our history, and continue to always ask 'why' we are making the art?
What is the art about? What are the links? Perhaps this is not
necessarily Montessori, but will help you with the paradigm shift you
need to adjust to.
