potters wheels in elementary - response from two years experience

Unless you have a really small class or a good class, conduct wise and can
trust fifth graders while helping one on one with the potter's wheel, I
wouldn't advise it. I'm not doing it next year because my classes are 32 plus
with EH and SL students sprinkled in. I choose fifth graders, because of their
concentration and their arm span was long enough to center a pot, but my class
became unmanageable by about Christmas time, so I stopped rewarding good
students with the potter's wheel.
Maybe you can get a volunteer to help in the class.
