Several years ago the private school I taught at had an ocean theme. Each
classroom was assigned a different part of the ocean: the beach, the
estuary, the tide pools and shallow water, the deep sea and the coral
reef. They studied each area and during art class we transformed the one
long hallway into a trip into the ocean and then up the ramp at the end of
the hall (the coral reef). We painted the walls, built a cardboard and
paper tide pool and had three dimensional fish and rocks and seaweed. It
was great fun! There were opportunities for lots of learning. For
example, primary students learned how to mix paint and create the beige
color for sand using only primary colors and white and black! Your really
felt like you were going under the sea! The coral reef segment was a
multi-age group of students (a few from each class). It was a great
opportunity for older students to work with and help the younger students.
