FYI
Nevada 2000/Teaching and Learning the Arts Project
With a Nevada 2000 grant of $207,773 for this year, the TALA Project is
going at full steam. Each of the six consortium school districts,
working in conjunction with its paired local arts agency, is busily
engaged in implementing the professional development plan created last
fall by its Arts Development Team. These plans all involve providing
professional development workshops in the arts for targeted groups of
teachers in each district. Because TALA Project is the only one of its
kind in any of the fifty stated, it is attracting national attention. At
a recent meeting, the governance Panel for the the project unanimously
endorsed the submission of a grant application asking for funding for a
second year of the project. (September 1997 - June 1998), and the
Project director (Bob Parker), NSCA’s AIE program Coordinator) is
currently writing the application, which is due on May 12. The final
major event for this year is an intensive, two-weeks Summer Institute in
the Arts which will be held in Reno from July 7 - 18 at the combined
facilities of Glenn Duncan Elementary School and Traner Middle School.
